Landscapes by Doolang Design
Nature has always been near and dear to me. As a youth I was drawn towards the organic nature of Japanese Gardens and even custom designed a class at my high school exclusively for me so I could study it and the culture that gave rise to it.
Whatever else I have done in life, I have always been drawn back to landscapes. I love the wild beauty of nature. I love the malleability of earth. Here is my personal vegetable garden. Sculpted from the earth in the shape of a 100 foot tall sunflower, 60 feet wide. The petals are laid out on a compass rosette. The cardinal directions are marked by the inner red petunias near the center button (most prominent in the lower picture), with the far right being solar or true north. At the top left of the sunflower is a rainbow. The central path is the stem and the leaves extend to either side. The fence was also a Doolang Design crafted entirely from scrap wood salvaged from a local sawmill. We grow mixed plantings of flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables.
Inspired by the Orinoco River Delta, it reminds one that no matter which path you take you will always arrive home.
A landscape should always include a private escape: A sacred space. A walk to remember or forget.
A landscape should always have a place to sit and reflect.
